Appelbe, professional writer Alison Appelbe is a freelance writer specializing in travel. Europe and its cultures (in the broadest sense) is a specialty. She also writes about her native province of British Columbia, and other Canadian and international destinations. Her work appears in newspapers and magazines in Canada and the U.S. She takes her own photos. Her guidebook is Secret Vancouver: The Unique Guidebook to Vancouver's Hidden Sites, Sounds & Tastes (ECW Press, Toronto, second edition, 2010). She contributed to Fodor's Vancouver and Victoria (2008) and Time Out Vancouver (2007). A former newspaper reporter, Alison was a winner or finalist of 10 journalism awards between 1988 and 2000. In 2008, she won first prize in a competition sponsored by Portugal Tourism, for an article on the Azores. She's a member of the Society of American Travel Writers.
