Alison Appelbe is a freelance writer specializing in travel. Europe (West and East) and its cultures (in the broadest sense) is a specialty. She also writes about her native Vancouver and province of British Columbia, and other destinations. As well, on cruising, tourism, meetings, real estate, architecture (and art). Her work appears in Canada, the U.S., Australia and Europe. She takes her own photos. Her guidebook is Secret Vancouver: The Unique Guidebook to Vancouver's Hidden Sites, Sounds & Tastes (ECW Press, Toronto, 2003 and spring, 2009). She contributed to Fodor's Vancouver and Victoria (2008) and Time Out Vancouver (2007). She wrote the Mobil guide to Vancouver (2006). In 2008, Alison won first prize in a competition sponsored by Portugal Tourism, for an article on the Azores. A former newspaper reporter, she was a winner or finalist of 10 journalism awards between 1988 and 2000. She's a member of the Society of American Travel Writers.
